NOMINATED for Extraordinary International / Foreign Language Film
SYNOPSIS
Jasmine tells the story of Mala, a mother from a newly immigrated Indian family in Australia, who dreams of sending her daughter, Neerali, to soccer camp. Her husband, Jay, is
struggling with financial setbacks and feelings of inadequacy, while Mala takes a job at a plant nursery to support Neerali’s dreams. However, as she juggles work and family life, Mala
begins to slip in her responsibilities at home, straining relationships within the family. Jasmine subtly conveys that no matter how much Mala sacrifices for her family, society’s expectations of mothers remain unyielding, implying that her efforts will never be seen as enough. Jasmine touches on themes of sacrifice, familial duty, and the complexities of the immigrant experience, exploring the quiet strength required to navigate these pressures.
