Writer's ColLab 2025

The YAFF Writer's ColLab is a program dedicated to creating a space to help young writers develop their work in a forum of peers, fellow writers and industry professionals.

History

The Young Australian Film Festival aims to celebrate and empower the next generation of Storytellers. As young filmmakers, we realised that despite the wide range of film schools across Australia, there were very few film festivals dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging young talent. As a result of these challenges, we created the Young Australian Film Festival, an event for young filmmakers to showcase their work in a forum that is:

  1. Affordable for those who are unable to enter some of the larger festivals

  2. Accessible to diverse filmmakers from all walks of film

  3. Creating a supportive and inclusive environment where creatives can submit their work without the threat of having to compete with more experienced filmmakers.

We had our inaugural event in September 2024, and have expanded the festival for 2025 to create even more opportunities for young filmmakers, leading to the creation of our first ever, YAFF Writer's ColLab.

About the Program

The program ran over a 10 week period and consisted of a weekly workshop on Tuesday nights to develop new works with emerging writers. Participants were able to connect with each other and create a supportive and nurturing environment for them to learn, create and grow.

At the end of the 10 weeks, writer's had the opportunity to present their works in a public reading with professional actors.
